The Business Process Management Initiative (BPMI) has developed a standard Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN). The BPMN 1.0 specification was released to the public in May 2004. The specification represents more than two years of work by the BPMI Notation Working Group. In February 2006, the OMG released a BPMN specification document. Version 2.0 of BPMN was developed in 2010 and the actual version of the specification was released in December 2013.

Business Process Diagram is a very good tool to model the workflow for your company or department because it gives a clear picture about who is responsible for a particular task as well as the flow of the process. However, the Business Process Diagram does not tell us how a particular task should be performed.

BPMN stands for Business Process Modeling Notation. BPMN is very similar to the concept of flowcharting that has been around since the 1980s. Like flowcharting BPMN modeling has the aim of allowing a person to map a workflow in such a way that it can be understood easily by other interested parties.

Business Process Model and Notation has become the de-facto standard for business processes diagrams. It is intended to be used directly by the stakeholders who design, manage and realize business processes, but at the same time be precise enough to allow BPMN diagrams to be translated into software process components.

Gap analysis involves the comparison of actual performance with potential performance. For example, a company does not make the best use of current resources, it may perform below an idealized potential. In other words, gap analysis is the process people use to examine their current state (or as-is process) with their desired state (to-be process) of a company. It typically is used to determine if the company is meeting expectations and effectively using resources that measure time, money and labor. The management team can then create an action plan to move the organization forward and close the performance gap.
